Al Gore, Glenn Beck & Al-Jazeera

The recent sale of Al Gore’s Current TV network to Al-Jazeera sheds much needed, but much disturbing light onto the darkness; the darkness that are the values and the quality of Progressive/Democrat leadership in this country. As you might recall, in 2000 we came within a whisker of living under the leadership of Al Gore. As it turns out we got a good and decent man instead, George W. Bush.

Read some snippets about the Al-Jazeera transaction:

From on 03 Jan 2013

The Wall Street Journal revealed that when Beck’s TheBlaze TV sought ownership of the Current broadcasting network, the bid was rejected because the principles of Beck’s company did not align with those of Current.
“Other suitors who didn’t share Current’s ideology were rebuffed,” reporters Keach Hagey and John Jannarone wrote in the
Wall Street Journal. “Glenn Beck’s TheBlaze approached Current about buying the channel last year, but was told that ‘the legacy of who the network goes to is important to us and we are sensitive to networks not aligned with our point of view,'” according to a person familiar with the negotiations.”

The former vice president confirmed the sale Wednesday that reportedly netted $500 million, saying in a statement that Al-Jazeera shares Current TV’s mission “to give voice to those who are not typically heard; to speak truth to power; to provide independent and diverse points of view; and to tell the stories that no one else is telling.”

Now read some snippets from the Wall Street Journal of January 7, 2013 in an OP-ED Inconvenient Truths About Al Jazeera:

…  journalistic coverage over the years of Al Jazeera’s Arabic and English broadcasts, which discloses the unsurprising fact that the network reflects the interests of the government that runs it—making it akin to Vladimir Putin’s Russia Today and Beijing’s Xinhua. … (My comment here: and making it akin to the Democrat party’s house organ MSNBC).

Mr. Gore could have read the Middle East Quarterly profile titled “The Two Faces of Al Jazeera.” The network gets good marks for programming in areas outside the emir’s direct interests, but the article concludes that Al Jazeera continues “to inflame Arab resentments in its promotion of anti-Americanism, Sunni sectarianism and, in recent years, Islamism.”

In 2008, Al Jazeera threw an on-air party for Samir Kuntar when he was released from an Israeli prison. Kuntar led a Palestine Liberation Front terrorist team that kidnapped an Israeli family in 1979. He shot the father and killed the 4-year-old daughter by smashing her head against rocks along the beach. In footage available on YouTube, Al Jazeera’s Beirut bureau chief hands Kuntar a scimitar to cut the celebratory cake and says: “This is the sword of the Arabs, Samir.”

In 2009, Yusuf al-Qaradawi, host of the network’s most popular Arabic-language show, “Shariah and Life,” said on air (also available on YouTube): “Oh, Allah, take this oppressive Jewish, Zionist band of people. Oh Allah, do not spare a single one of them. Oh Allah, count their numbers and kill them, down to the very last one.” Perhaps Mr. Gore doesn’t have access to YouTube.

My comments again:
What are we to make of this? On the one hand we have a man like Glenn Beck; a self made man who constantly brings to the fore, and highlights, core American principles and values such as “Government of the people, by the people and for the people … “.  A Glenn Beck who promotes an understanding of the lives and contributions of American founders; the lives of George Washington, James Madison, John Adams and many others. A Glenn beck who promotes the ideals present in a Biblical world view that gives value to the worth and dignity of every person … because every person is a creation of God. A Glenn Beck who highlights the major, and at times the singular, contributions of this great American Civilization to the annuls of human liberty and dignity.

Instead what we hear are the tirades, the tirades of self imposed ignorance from Progressives calling Beck a Nazi, a racist and unworthy of the mantle of being called an American.

Looking at some of my own e-mail archives I see …

Dear Don,
I am indeed sad that you looking to Fox for news.  There is virtually “no honest news” on Fox other than possibly the weather and sports.  Fox has for sometime been nothing other than an extreme right wing propaganda machine with totally discredited front men such as Rush Limbaugh and racist Glenn Beck … .

Please consider the incredibly biased source in this article.  The Wall Street Journal is now either controlled or owned by Robert Murdoch or “Newscorp” (where only the names are true and virtually anything else is either outright falsehoods, complete distortions or worse).  …

I truly consider Rupert Murdoch as the “Devil Incarnate” if there is actually such a thing. I have formed these beliefs over the past decade and am not going to change.

Propaganda and distortion not news is all that is available on Fox.  You are very likely aware that this view is shared by the vast majority of Americans.

So now we get a unvarnished view, an unvarnished world view that rejects a Glenn Beck as unacceptable because “his networks not aligned with our point of view.”  Instead what we get as acceptable from Al Gore (remember, he was just a hairs breath away from the American Presidency), is a world view that finds the advocacy and promotion of genocide, the deliberate murder of some 6,000,000 Jews as “ … aligned with our point of view.” One can legitimately come to the conclusion that such thinking sides with the thinking of one Adolf Hitler in the 1930s and 40s.

Come to your senses Progressive America. Let this sale of Current TV be a teachable moment for you, a very ugly but necessary teachable moment. Let the bright light of the circumstances of this sale reach into the depths of your conscience, and let it begin to trouble and irritate you as it should.  Let it trouble and irritate you to the point of action on your part.

The circumstances surrounding this sale are the very sorts of things that prompted me, very reluctantly, to write recently:

“A president, who I suspect more and more, that should he find himself  magically dropped into the leadership circles of Nazi Germany, Stalinist Soviet Union  or China under Chairman Mao would find himself to be entirely comfortable with his new surroundings and comrades.”

And before you go away mad or depressed, ponder these words from the apostle Paul:

2 Timothy 4

4 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge:2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

Glenn Beck is Better Educated than a UC Berkley Grad

I begin this essay by inviting you to read  two articles; the first is from the Wall Street Journal How California’s Colleges Indoctrinate Students by Peter Berkowitz in the March 30, 2012 issue. You may not have free access to that article, so I also refer you to the report A Crisis of Competence: The Corrupting Effect of Political Activism in the University of California which is the subject of Mr. Berkowitz’s article.

Since the original report is a quite lengthy 87 pages with numerous footnotes and references, I will rely on selected excerpts from the Journal report to illustrate my case that Mr. Beck is better educated by far than the average UC Berkley graduate, especially in areas of critical thinking, history, social sciences and the US Constitution. Mind you, Mr. Becks academic credentials are limited by his own admission to one course at Yale.

A UC Berkley grad’s credentials.

Note: The following are excerpts from the WSJ article.

… Numerous studies of both the UC system and of higher education nationwide demonstrate that students who graduate from college are increasingly ignorant of history and literature. They are unfamiliar with the principles of American constitutional government. And they are bereft of the skills necessary to comprehend serious books and effectively marshal evidence and argument in written work.

National studies by Stanley Rothman in 1999, and by Neil Gross and Solon Simmons in 2007, have shown that universities’ leftward tilt has become severe. And a 2005 study by Daniel Klein and Andrew Western in Academic Questions (a NAS publication) shows this is certainly true in California. For example, Democrats outnumbered Republicans four to one on University of California, Berkeley, professional school faculties; in the social sciences the ratio was approximately 21 to one.

The same 2005 study revealed that the Berkeley sociology department faculty was home to 17 Democrats and no Republicans. The political science department included 28 Democrats and two Republicans. The English department had 29 Democrats and one Republican; and the history department had 31 Democrats and one Republican.

As “A Crisis of Competence” notes, “a recent study by UCLA’s prestigious Higher Education Research Institute found that more faculty now believe that they should teach their students to be agents of social change than believe that it is important to teach them the classics of Western civilization.”

And this from the report “A Crisis of Competence:”

Printed course descriptions in campus catalogs are the most direct evidence of what is happening in the classroom. We can begin at the very heart of the University’s teaching program: a basic course in one of the largest and most respected departments at the flagship campus, UC Berkeley. In the two course sequence History 7AB (one of which is required for the major in history), the first is entitled “The United States from Settlement to the Civil War.” In the catalog, there follows a very brief statement of the goals of the course, which include “to understand how democratic political institutions emerged in the United States in this period in the context of an economy that depended on slave labor and violent land acquisition.”

I saw this anti-American bias being carried out on the streets of New Haven this past week in the person of Mick, a young ex-Marine I met and talked to at Occupy New Haven. Mick told me that he had attended a class where it was explained to him that the founders were terrorists. I recall that he attended this course somehow in the context of occupy, but I could be mistaken. In any case, that seemed to be his viewpoint. Has this young man ever been presented with a course where the character of George Washington, John Adams and others of the founders was presented? Has he ever been presented with a course where the principles of liberty & tyranny have been presented from folks such as John Locke, Charles de Montesquieu, Alexis de Tocqueville, James Madison and Alexander Hamilton and are discussed in a fair manner? If occupiers are being taught such biased history, then we should not expect the best behavior from these folks, but rather should expect the pitch forks and torches from many of them.

Mr. Beck’s credentials.

At a minimum,  Glenn Beck can be described as a self made man, and a highly successful one at that.  He has parlayed his communications skills (a gift of gab as a radio DJ) into a highly successful media company which includes radio, TV, authorship and publishing as well as web based productions and Blogs. Beck has written and co-authored a number of best sellers, most centered on American history and politics.

But the thing I admire most is his passion for the foundation of this nation; the first principles if you will, and the lives and ideas of the founders, and his passion for sharing this knowledge (unlike UC Berkley).

While on FoxNews Beck had a series called “Founders Friday” where he would feature a particular founding father. The Friday show would feature a broad and deep discussion with one or more authority on the founder; a historian and/or biographer who had written a significant work on the founder under examination.  Some of the founders I recall were:

  • George Whitefield
  • George Washington
  • Benjamin Franklin
  • Samuel Adams
  • Fredrick Douglas
  • Thomas Jefferson
  • James Madison
  • John Adams
  • … and others

Other significant historical figures featured by Beck include Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German Christian pastor who defied Adolf Hitler to the point of his involvement in an assassination attempt on Hitler and Bonhoeffer’s resulting execution.

I and many other Americans like me have become much more educated and informed about American history than ever before; by watching his programs and following up by reading the books he has featured.

I can take a credit course in the counter revolutionary “occupy” movement at Columbia University, but may be hard pressed to find a quality unbiased course in the original American Revolution, its roots, principles and values. Beck has been filling that gap, and it’s free.

Beck Honored as Defender of Israel

I’ve heard Glenn Beck called many things including anti-semetic and Nazi. Not true!

On Sunday, Glenn Beck was honored in New York City at the Zionist Organization of America’s (ZOA) Justice Louis D. Brandeis Award Dinner for his ardent defense of Israel. But the ZOA wasn‘t the only one singing Beck’s praises. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also recognized Beck’s efforts.

Glenn Beck; the man with four hands

Glenn Beck; the man with four hands

· With one hand he shines a bright light into the dirtiest, most corrupt and dangerous places in American government.

· With another hand he shines a bright light onto the founding people, values and principles that have made this country the greatest civilization the world has ever seen.

· His other two hands? He holds a rabid, slobbering snarling wolf by the ears, and tries to keep it at bay.

You can help Glenn keep the wolf at bay. Grab hold of a part of that wolf yourself, and help to banish it from our midst.

Glenn Beck – An American Patriot of the first rank

Posted by The Real Don Johnson on Thursday, May 06, 2010 6:53:08 PM

It’s time to recognize Glenn Beck for who and what he is, An American Patriot of the First Rank. I say this from several perspectives;

First, he points us back to the fundamental principles of this great American Civilization, and to the people and history that established it.

Secondly, he alerts us to the very real threats to this republic, and in doing so has shown us the example of what an American patriot should be.

If this republic survives, it will be because of people like Glenn Beck.

If this republic fails, it will be because of people like Barack Obama.
