Books Every ‘Seeker’ Should Read

image
(Click above to read the article)

A friend posted this article originally titled “26 Books Every ‘Spiritual But Not Religious’ Seeker Should Read.” I didn’t catch why she excluded “religious” seekers from her list. Nevertheless, a worthy topic, and one I would like to expand on to include this “seeker” – me – and a list of my own that have influenced me in my 73 years of life.

I will begin in my late teens when I was dating my wife of now 53 years. She was a Roman Catholic, and I thought if this young romance is to go anywhere, perhaps I should learn a little of her religion. I had little or no religious beliefs, let alone knowledge, but I did understand that Catholicism was the oldest religion, and therefore if there was a “true” religion, this was most likely it. I don’t recall thinking of the many other religions – Islam, Buddhism, Judaism … I wanted to know about the “real” one — I was a “seeker.”

So at the age of about 18 I frequented the local library and started to read about Catholicism. I have no recollection of the books I looked into, but suffice it to say that this brief experience began my life as a “seeker.”

A few years later I would fall under the influence of my girlfriend’s older brother – an Atheist. Gordon had a persuasive gift of gab, and me being a “seeker” he had a ready student and introduced me to Atheism and Existentialism, hence the first books on my list.

    • Why I Am Not A Christian  — Bertrand Russell.
    • No Exit  — Jean Paul Sartre
    • Being and Nothingness – Jean Paul Sartre
    • The Playboy Philosophy – Hugh Hefner

Skipping ahead a few years, married and back in college after a time working and a Navy tour, I read books like this one:

    • The Passover Plot  — Hugh J. Schonfield
A book “debunking” the Jesus myth.

So during those years I guess I considered my “seeking” finished and I settled into a world view of evangelical Atheism – yes I was outspoken and mocking of all things religious.  I’m sure there were other books from that era, but I don’t recall. The ones listed above were certainly the most influential in my life.

So at a ripe old age of early twenties, I settled into my “know it all” world view of Atheism.  This lasted to age 36.

I’ll list the books that transformed my life (and that of my family as well) from that point on, beginning with the earliest:

    • The Late Great Planet Earth  — Hal Lindsey.
    • There’s A New World Coming – Hal Lindsey
    • The Rapture  — Hal Lindsey
    • Satan Is Alive and Well on Planet Earth  — Hal Lindsey
    • Others by Hal Lindsey

Lindsey’s books unexpectedly caught my attention when I innocently picked up his Late Great Planet Earth  book back in 1980. I thought I was going to read a fanciful yarn akin to Erich von Däniken‘s “Chariots of the Gods.” What I got instead was Lindsey laying out a case claiming that today’s current events line up with the prophetic Biblical writings of thousands of years ago describing the “last days” of planet earth. This was like getting hit upside the head with a 2×4 and got my attention and interest.

Lindsey wrote his book in the 1970s in the midst of the Cold War  when the Soviet Union was a strong and prominent player on the world stage and Communism was on the march in many parts of the world. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, it appeared that Lindsey might be off the mark in highlighting Russia as one of the key players in the “end times” scenario. However, Russia is once more prominent as a world power, and in fact is now positioned in the Middle east (Syria) whereas it was not in the 1970s – something to pay attention too.

There are many other thinkers and writers on Biblical Prophesy and I have read a number of them  — some good and others not so good (an exercise for the student?). But let me move on …

Lindsey’s books, along with my study of the actual Biblical passages he highlighted, launched me out of atheism and into Christianity. But I was a total rookie and had many questions and internal conflicts. The following are some of the books and ministries that helped this “seeker” through those oft-times confusing times.

I could go on and on, but let me conclude …

During this period of seeking and growth back in the early 1980s, I actually did read the Bible through from cover to cover.  One of the surprises I found, as one of the worlds foremost experts in that book that I had not previously opened,  were the many  practical lessons useful for living a full life … how to be a better husband, father, friend, employee, boss, brother, son, citizen …

So I would encourage you as a fellow “seeker”, don’t stop at being just a “spiritual seeker”, but press on to seek the whole banquet that will fill that hunger within you.

The Mark of the Beast: When Information Storage Gets Under Your Skin

Check it out!!

Two articles written 2000 years apart talking about the same technology. The earlier one written by a lonely fisherman punished and  banished to the small Middle eastern island of Patmos – the second article written by a modern day journalist describing todays technology which has the potential of enabling the fisherman’s peek into a future time – a time looking a lot like the world I live in today.

The first article – From the Biblical book of Revelation, written in the 1st century.

The second article in yesterdays Wall Street Journal.

Read on …  If you dare!

“ … The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed.

It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,

so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.

This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.e That number is 666.  … “Revelation 13:15-18

Tiny implants can replace keys, store business cards and medical data—and eventually a lot more

By Nina Adam  and  William Wilkes  Sept. 18, 2016 10:11 p.m.

Patrick Paumen doesn’t have to worry about forgetting his keys and being locked out of his apartment. That is because he doesn’t need a key anymore—he simply unlocks the door with a wave of his hand.

The 32-year-old IT expert from the Dutch city of Heerlen is one of a growing number of people with electronic implants under their skin, mostly to use as keys or for identification.

Mr. Paumen has several such implants, or tags, embedded in the fatty tissue of his hands and his lower arm. He uses separate tags to unlock not only his apartment door, but also his office and the gate to a secure parking lot at work. Another stores information he would otherwise put on a business card—name and contact details—and yet another holds similar information for nonbusiness encounters.

Mr. Paumen says the tiny devices simplify his life. When nearing the secure office parking lot, he says, “I just roll down the window, stick my arm out and let the reader at the gates scan the implant, which is just below my little finger. I don’t have to worry about losing my access card.”

Done in seconds

There is no comprehensive data on how many people have RFID implants in their bodies, but retailers estimate the total is 30,000 to 50,000 people globally.

The fact that the tags can’t be lost is one attraction. Another, users say, is that the tags don’t operate under their own power but rather are activated when they’re read by a scanner. That means they can never be rendered useless by a dead battery like smartphones.

It only takes a few seconds to inject the small glass cylinder containing a tag, the size of a grain of rice, under the skin. It can be done by anyone, but proponents say it is best done by a trained person with sterilized equipment to lower the risk of infection.

Once a tag is implanted, there can be an adjustment period: “They can move a little bit depending on skin type and activities,” says Quentin Inglis, owner of the Kalima Emporium, a tattoo and piercing studio in Worthing, England, who has implanted tags for several customers. Mr. Inglis keeps his business card on an implanted tag. “I do a lot of climbing, so mine moved around a bit until it found a position it was happiest with,” he says.

Medical potential

Implanted tags have a demonstrated potential for use in travel. Andreas Sjöström, the head of digital solutions at Sogeti, a technology consulting unit of Capgemini Group, used an implanted tag loaded with information identifying him as a Scandinavian Airlines customer to board an SAS flight from Stockholm to Paris for the first time in December, and has since used the tag several times for SAS flights. The tag contains the same information some SAS passengers normally have on a sticker used for the same purpose, and is read by the same scanner the airline uses for those stickers.

Electronic RFID tags that go under the skin are being used to store personal information and give users access to secure areas.

Some people list emergency contacts on an implanted tag. And others see potential for the use of the tags in medicine, though one big challenge needs to be addressed for those visions to become reality: Medical personnel or anyone else trying to help someone in a medical or emergency situation will need to have some way to know that the person they’re trying to help has potentially lifesaving information available under his or her skin.

For instance, Kevin Warwick, deputy vice chancellor at Coventry University in England and an expert in cybernetics, says that people who suffer from epilepsy often wear pendants that identify them as having epilepsy and sometimes provide emergency contacts and some basic information on how to help a person having a seizure. But the pendant can be lost or forgotten—a tag cannot. Paramedics and other first responders could be trained to check for tags, he says, and perhaps people with epilepsy could have a small tattoo or some other marker to help other people find the tag.

Another idea for medical use: “In hospitals, you could have a small thing implanted to make sure this is the right patient or person for this operation, to reduce the number of errors there are in medical operations,” Dr. Warwick says.

The tags also can be used to access medical records. Information stored on a tag can easily be updated with the tag remaining in place.

Advocates also hope it won’t be long before the implants will allow them to make payments in cafes or shops, the way smart cards are used. Mr. Sjöström says the technology is capable of enabling such transactions, if software standards are developed to allow them. Data security is also an issue here, he says, as the current generation of implants isn’t capable of the same level of encryption as existing electronic payment systems.

Ethical issues

Skeptics point to ethical concerns that will have to be addressed before tag implants become more common. While there may be no issue with implanting a tag under the skin of consenting adults, things could become tricky if a person doesn’t want it or isn’t in control of the tag’s content.

For instance, the use of a tag “is ethically straightforward and even useful” for people who can’t grip a key because of extreme arthritis or the loss of a hand, says Arianne Shahvisi, a lecturer in ethics at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School in the U.K. But while tags also could be used by people with dementia to carry identifying information and to ensure that they would never lose their keys, it would be “troubling” in such cases because the patient may not be able to give proper consent to the procedure.

Privacy concerns will also have to be addressed before tag implants can reach their full potential. Although people promoting them say the implants currently on sale can only be picked up by readers in very close range, some people worry that strangers could still tap their personal information without their knowledge or consent.

And while many adults are repelled by the idea of manipulating a perfectly healthy body, young people may accept it as they do most technology surrounding them. Take Patrick and Birthe Kramer, a couple in Hamburg, Germany, who have implants that unlock the door to their home. Their 2-year-old son, whose body remains chip free, already imitates his parents by trying to open the front door with a swish of his hand.

ISIS, the Nations and the End of the World –maybe it’s time to take the Bible seriously.

vanimpe-mapofendtimesinvasion

I became a Christian in 1981 largely through the unexpected realization that the Bible was true. This realization in my life came through predictive Bible prophesy made vivid in the books of Hal Lindsey, mainly his book The Late Great Planet Earth, what the New York Times called the “no. 1 non-fiction bestseller of the decade.” (1970s).

Hal Lindsey
               (click  on the image above)

Read here the Barnes & Noble Overview of the book:

The impact of The Late Great Planet Earth cannot be overstated. The New York Times called it the “no. 1 non-fiction bestseller of the decade.” For Christians and non-Christians of the 1970s, Hal Lindsey’s blockbuster served as a wake-up call on events soon to come and events already unfolding — all leading up to the greatest event of all: the return of Jesus Christ. The years since have confirmed Lindsey’s insights into what biblical prophecy says about the times we live in. Whether you’re a church-going believer or someone who wouldn’t darken the door of a Christian institution, the Bible has much to tell you about the imminent future of this planet. In the midst of an out-of-control generation, it reveals a grand design that’s unfolding exactly according to plan. The rebirth of Israel. The threat of war in the Middle East. An increase in natural catastrophes. The revival of Satanism and witchcraft. These and other signs, foreseen by prophets from Moses to Jesus, portend the coming of an antichrist . . . of a war which will bring humanity to the brink of destruction . . . and of incredible deliverance for a desperate, dying planet.

And here we are,  decades later. Has that scare gone away? Are the events Lindsey talked about no longer of interest? Can we go  on with our lives and no longer worry about such earth-shattering events and now concentrate our worry on Global Warming?

Well no … the events and players in and around Israel are still in play, and perhaps even more relevant than in the 1970s when Lindsey wrote.

Even a casual, uninformed and uninterested person must have at least a passing interest and knowledge of events in the Middle East … and this describes me in those many years ago in my Atheist past.

So let me bring you up to date on what some are saying here in the much more enlightened year of 2016.

The following article is by Greg Laurie from the January issue of Decision magazine:

ISIS, the Nations and the End of the World

/Users/Navy/Desktop/GREG+CATHE SF/Processed/.IMG_2870.jpg

The Bible tells us in 2 Timothy 3 that in the last days, things will go from bad to worse. We could compare events in the last days to dominoes that are closely stacked together. Once the first domino goes, the others will fall in rapid succession.

That is how it will be with world events in the last days, beginning with the emergence of the Antichrist. Then there is the Tribulation period. Then there is the Battle of Armageddon. Then there is the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Then there is the Millennium. These events are closely stacked together. And once the first one starts, the others will follow in rapid succession. Events in our world today are getting very close to that. I think I can safely say that we have never been closer to the return of Jesus than we are right now.

In October 2014, at the Aspen Institute’s Washington Ideas Forum, former U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel was quoted as saying, “I think we are living through one of these historic, defining times. I think we are seeing a new world order.”

Hagel went on to say, “What we’re seeing in the Middle East with [ISIS] is going to require a steady, long-term effort. It’s going to require coalitions of common interests, which we are forming.”

We have shifting and change in global powers right now. A new world order will emerge. And I believe there are things happening right now that we have never seen before in human history. It is a reminder that Christ is coming.

Ezekiel 38 says that a large nation to the north of Israel’s newly established homeland, along with a number of allies, will invade Israel from every direction.

Get out a map of the world and find the little sliver of land in the Middle East known as Israel. Now look to Israel’s north. What do you find? You find Russia. Is Russia actually the force known as Magog, which the Bible says will march against Israel in the last days? No one can say with absolute certainty, but I think we can make a pretty good case for it.

Magog was the second son of Japheth (see Genesis 10:2), whose descendants, according to the Jewish historian Josephus, settled north of the Black Sea. The descendants of Tubal and Meshech, Japheth’s fifth and sixth sons, settled south of the Black Sea. These tribes intermarried and became known as Magog, settling to the north of Israel. In Ezekiel 39, God says, “I am your enemy, O Gog, ruler of the nations of Meshech and Tubal. I will turn you around and drive you toward the mountains of Israel, bringing you from the distant north” (Ezekiel 39:1-2).

Then there are the allies that ultimately will march with Magog. In Ezekiel 38 God says to Gog, “Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya will join you, too, with all their weapons” (Ezekiel 38:5). Persia officially became known as Iran in 1935. In 1979, Iran became an Islamic republic.

If the Magog that Ezekiel is speaking of is indeed Russia, then it’s fascinating that Iran is identified as an ally of Magog’s. It is worth noting that for 2,500 years, Russia had no alliance with Persia (Iran). That is, until now. Today they are officially allies. An alliance prophesied 2,500 years ago has been formed now. It is indeed a sign of the times.

General Mohammad Naghdi, commander of Iran’s Basij forces, stated, “Our ideal is not [nuclear] centrifuges but the destruction of the White House and the annihilation of Zionism [Israel].”

Which brings us to ISIS. Initially dismissed as a junior varsity rebel group, they have proven to be a major player in terrorism. We were all horrified by the attack in Paris, where 130 people died. Now it has come to America’s doorstep. San Bernardino is now the site of the largest American terrorist attack since 9/11. Terrorists Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik killed 14, leaving another 21 wounded. Malik pledged her loyalty to ISIS on Facebook and ISIS has called the shooters “followers.” It appears that Malik radicalized Farook.

We have never faced a terrorist group like ISIS before. Sebastian Gorka, an expert on ISIS, works closely with the U.S. Army Special Operations Command and the intelligence community. He proposes that ISIS is far more dangerous than Al Qaeda.

Among his findings are the fact that ISIS is the richest group of its type in human history, with enough cash to level about 1,600 terrorist acts equivalent to 9/11. He describes their ability to recruit as mind-boggling; they have recruited 19,000 foreign fighters in the last nine months. They do this largely through social media, radicalizing people online who have no digital footprint. These people are not necessarily being monitored by authorities. They do not have to be authorized by ISIS or anyone else. They get radicalized and they act. There are links to training videos that show them how to create acts of terrorism. They use encrypted technologies that hinder the ability of authorities to intercept and analyze information. This was not even possible until the last 10 years.

All of this is done with the objective of producing a global caliphate, or Islamic government.

Jesus told us to be aware of the signs of His return. And when those signs get closer together and bigger and brighter, we know that His coming is near. In fact, it seems as though every time we turn around, there is a new sign. That is what Jesus said it would be like before His return. These events will be happening closer and closer together, and we certainly are seeing that today.

As I see world events unfolding, I wonder if perhaps the Lord isn’t waiting for that last person to believe before He calls His church home. In fact, that person may be walking around on Earth somewhere today.

I believe the only hope for America is a nationwide revival.

Not convinced?
I can understand your reluctance and hesitance – even your welled up anger at some religious Jesus Freak  “trying to push his religion down my throat.” I’ve been there … I understand.

Don’t believe me … don’t believe Hal Lindsey … don’t believe Greg Laurie.

Do your own homework, your own research … don’t trust me … don’t go to church (yet) … read authors like Lindsey, Laurie and others and ask yourself perfectly reasonable questions:  “are these guys nuts?” “are these guys extremist religious weirdos … and how dangerous are they?”

Then check out what they are saying against history and current events.  Are they just liars out to make a buck on the gullible?

And finally … check out what they are saying against what’s actually written in the Bible. This may take some amount of courage … to actually open and read the Bible.

But ultimately what you do with it is totally up to you alone. You must decide for yourself what is truth in these matters.

This is not a matter of trying to win an argument.

In Hoc Anno Domini

This newspaper classic is reprinted from the Wall Street Journal, where Vermont Royster’s Christmas editorial has run every year since 1949

  ________________

When Saul of Tarsus set out on his journey to Damascus the whole of the known world lay in bondage. There was one state, and it was Rome. There was one master for it all, and he was Tiberius Caesar.

Everywhere there was civil order, for the arm of the Roman law was long. Everywhere there was stability, in government and in society, for the centurions saw that it was so.

But everywhere there was something else, too. There was oppression — for those who were not the friends of Tiberius Caesar. There was the tax gatherer to take the grain from the fields and the flax from the spindle to feed the legions or to fill the hungry treasury from which divine Caesar gave largess to the people. There was the impressor to find recruits for the circuses. There were executioners to quiet those whom the Emperor proscribed. What was a man for but to serve Caesar?

There was the persecution of men who dared think differently, who heard strange voices or read strange manuscripts. There was enslavement of men whose tribes came not from Rome, disdain for those who did not have the familiar visage. And most of all, there was everywhere a contempt for human life. What, to the strong, was one man more or less in a crowded world?

Then, of a sudden, there was a light in the world, and a man from Galilee saying, Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s.

And the voice from Galilee, which would defy Caesar, offered a new Kingdom in which each man could walk upright and bow to none but his God. Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. And he sent this gospel of the Kingdom of Man into the uttermost ends of the earth.

So the light came into the world and the men who lived in darkness were afraid, and they tried to lower a curtain so that man would still believe salvation lay with the leaders.

But it came to pass for a while in divers places that the truth did set man free, although the men of darkness were offended and they tried to put out the light. The voice said, Haste ye. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness come upon you, for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

Along the road to Damascus the light shone brightly. But afterward Paul of Tarsus, too, was sore afraid. He feared that other Caesars, other prophets, might one day persuade men that man was nothing save a servant unto them, that men might yield up their birthright from God for pottage and walk no more in freedom.

Then might it come to pass that darkness would settle again over the lands and there would be a burning of books and men would think only of what they should eat and what they should wear, and would give heed only to new Caesars and to false prophets. Then might it come to pass that men would not look upward to see even a winter’s star in the East, and once more, there would be no light at all in the darkness.

And so Paul, the apostle of the Son of Man, spoke to his brethren, the Galatians, the words he would have us remember afterward in each of the years of his Lord:

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

Excerpt:

“Inside the camp, inside the low single-story buildings beyond the double rows of electrified barbed wire, the Soviet army found piles of shoes, more that could be counted, “shoes piled like pieces of coal” or “rising in a high mound like grain.” Some shoes had worn out soles and no laces; some had tumbled down off the high pile and had landed back on the floor. In one room, all the shoes were small, small enough to fit easily in a man’s hand. They were baby and toddler shoes; many pairs were evidentially the children’s first shoes. Along with the shoes, there were piles of human teeth, piles of hair and piles of eyeglasses with cracked lenses and broken or bent frames. Everywhere there were piles of things.  … “

A review:

“Winik . . . turns his attention to Franklin Delano Roosevelt in this fast-paced history of the year the world was at a crossroads. . . . 1944 is a bracing war story about an inspiring president who led the Allies to victory but missed opportunities to save countless lives.”
–Jane Ciabattari, BBC

      ____________________

This book by Winik is sobering to the extreme. The history he tells of one of the greatest crimes in human history is depressing, but necessary to know and deal with – I say one of the greatest crimes because the Communist empire of the Soviet Union, China, Cambodia killed far more people than the German  Nazi regime, but that is left for another time and another essay.

The Germans under Hitler came within months of totally annihilating all of the Jews in Europe – every man, woman and child of whatever age. That there were any left to emigrate to Palestine and create the new nation Israel was strictly a function of the war ending in the total defeat of Germany and its unconditional surrender. Even in its final death throws, the Germans were packing human beings by the tens-of-thousands into cattle cars and sending them to the gas chambers and crematoria of Auschwitz.

This history by Winik shows the exceptionalism of America, and also shows the necessity of a good America at a time when the light of  liberty was in extreme danger of being snuffed out – perhaps forever. All of Europe, except for Great Britain was conquered, and was under the demonic rule of Hitler and the Nazis – and Great Britain was under horrific siege as well. Hitler’s appetite was not quenched and he went after Russia as well.

Frightening times indeed.

This book is timely in light of the recent “agreement” with Iran which apparently gives Islam the green light to obtain nuclear weaponry and the missile ability to deliver those weapons – to Israel and elsewhere. For this reason, I believe this book should be a must read for all contenders for the US Presidency in 2016, as well as all concerned voters. The stakes are as high now as they were in the late 1930s to the end of World War II.  Hitler’s agenda was not ended in 1945 regarding the Jews … Hitler’s agenda is alive and well in Tehran and in the minds and hearts of the leaders of what is called radical Islam.

Peace in our time: or Complicity to Genocide — the nuclear deal with Iran

ohrdruf02

Nazi Gas Chamber

“Eisenhower ordered all available American troops to go and witness the horrors he’d just seen. He also forced German citizens and officials from nearby towns to do the same”

“He understood that there must be a record, first-hand evidence and incontrovertible answers to those who would deny the Holocaust.”

General Eisenhower was wise and correct in ordering American troops and German citizens to witness first hand the horror of the death camps let loose by the demonic Adolf Hitler and his NAZI henchmen. The final death toll of just the Jews alone was over 6,000,000 men women and children … and all of them non combatants in World War II.

When we look at the millennial long history of the persecution of the Jews beginning with what Moses described in his ancient writings we see a long standing  — and I have no hesitation in describing it as Satanic and Demonic — history of attempts to annihilate the Jew as a people and as a nation, and this includes modern Israel.

Read some of the things Moses had to say of the prophetic history of the Jews:

Dispersion — The Jews were warned repeatedly that they would be dispersed worldwide if they were not faithful to their covenant with God. Consider the words of Moses: “The Lord will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other…” (Deuteronomy 28:64; see also Leviticus 26:33).

Persecution — The Lord also warned the Jews that they would be persecuted wherever they went. Again, the words of Moses are graphic in this regard: “And among those nations you shall find no rest, and there shall be no resting place for the sole of your foot; but there the Lord will give you a trembling heart, failing of eyes, and despair of soul” (Deuteronomy 28:65).

Desolation — God promised that after their dispersion, their land would become “desolate” and their cities would become “waste” (Leviticus 26:33). Moses put it more graphically when he said, “the foreigner who comes from a distant land…will say, ‘All its land is brimstone and salt, a burning waste, unsown and unproductive, and no grass grows in it’” (Deuteronomy 29:22-23).

Preservation — But God in His marvelous grace promised He would preserve the Jews as a separate people during their worldwide wanderings. (See Isaiah 66:22; Jeremiah 30:11; 31:35-37.) Isaiah puts it in a colorful way. He says the Lord could no more forget Israel than a mother could forget her nursing child (Isaiah 49:15). He then adds that God cannot forget Israel because He has them tattooed on the palms of His hands! (Isaiah 49:16). –

Regathering — The Old Testament prophets promise repeatedly that the day will come when God will regather the Jews to Palestine (see Isaiah 11:10-12 and Ezekiel 36:22-28). This remarkable regathering of the Jews from the four corners of the earth has occurred in our life time. World War I prepared the land for the people as the control of Palestine was transferred from a nation that hated the Jews (the Turks) to a nation that was sympathetic to their return (Britain). The Holocaust of World War II prepared the people for the land by motivating them to return.

Nationhood — The prophets stated that when the people were regathered, the nation of Israel would be re-established. This occurred on May 14, 1948 (see Isaiah 66:7-8; Zechariah 12:3-6). This is the cornerstone prophetic event of our age. It is an event that prophetic scholars have pointed to for 400 years amid much scoffing and ridicule by those who did not believe that Israel would ever exist again as a nation.

Reclamation — God promised that with the re-establishment of the nation, the land would bloom again (Isaiah 35:1-7; Joel 2:21-26). As Ezekiel put it, people would one day exclaim: “This desolate land has become like the garden of Eden!” (Ezekiel 36:35). And that is exactly what people exclaim today when they visit Israel, for it is once again a land of milk and honey. Over 300 million trees have been planted in this century. Rainfall has increased 450 percent. The former malaria infested swamps have been converted into cultivated land. Water from the Sea of Galilee has been channeled to the deserts, causing them to bloom.

Language — When the Jews were scattered worldwide in the first century, they ceased speaking the Hebrew language. The Jews who settled in Europe developed a language called Yiddish (a combination of Hebrew and German). The Jews in the Mediterranean basin mixed Hebrew with Spanish to produce a language called Ladino. The prophet Zephaniah implied a time would come when the Hebrew language would be revived (Zephaniah 3:9). It has been. Today the Israelis speak Biblical Hebrew. It is the only example in history of the resurrection of a dead language. The man God used to revive the language was Eliezer Ben Yehuda (1858-1922).

Jerusalem — Jesus said that one of the surest signs of His imminent return would be the re-occupation of Jerusalem by the Jews (Luke 21:24). This occurred during the Six Day War in June 1967.

Military Strength — Zechariah prophesied that when the Jews were re-established in the land, their military strength would be overwhelming — like “a flaming torch among sheaves” — and that they would “consume” all the peoples around them (Zechariah 12:6). Need anything be said about the fulfillment of this prophecy?

Focal Point — Israel is always pictured as the focal point of world politics in the end times (Zechariah 12:3; 14:1-9). This has been true since the Arab oil boycott in 1973. The West suddenly realized its dependence on Arab oil and began to line up behind the Arab obsession to annihilate Israel.

Tribulation — God will put the Jewish people through an unparalleled period of tribulation (Deuteronomy 4:30), during which two-thirds of the Jews will perish (Zechariah 13:8-9). The purpose will be to soften the hearts of a remnant so that they will accept Jesus as their Messiah.

Salvation — A remnant of the Jews will “look upon Him whom they have pierced” and will accept Him as Lord and Savior (Zechariah 12:10; Romans 11:1-6,25-29). 3) Primacy — God will then regather all the believing Jews to Israel where they will be established as the prime nation in the world during the millennial reign of Jesus. (See Deuteronomy 28:1,13; 2 Samuel 7:9; Isaiah 60-62; Micah 4:1-7.)

And finally, consider this prophesy about the city of Damascus Syria:

“This message came to me concerning Damascus: ‘Look, Damascus will disappear! It will become a heap of ruins. The cities of Aroer will be deserted. Sheep will graze in the streets and lie down unafraid. There will be no one to chase them away. The fortified cities of Israel will also be destroyed, and the power of Damascus will end. The few left in Aram will share the fate of Israel’s departed glory,’ says the Lord Almighty” (Isaiah 17:1-3, NLT).

It is said that Damascus is the oldest continuously populated city in the world, and yet Isaiah seems to be saying that it will be totally destroyed … and that destruction will occur virtually overnight.

Moving to modern times, during World War II the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, the uncle of Yasser Arafat,  spent much time in Berlin plotting and planning how to exterminate the Jews then living in Palestine.

And consider the many wars of annihilation brought against the nation Israel beginning with the first such war at the very beginning of the new nation of Israel in 1948.

Given this unbroken record of attempted genocide against the Jews beginning thousands of years ago and continuing to modern times, now look at the direct threats of Annihilation of Israel and the Jews by Iranian leaders going back to the Iranian Revolution of 1979.

Is the so called “nuclear deal” agreed to recently yet another thinly veiled attempt at the annihilation of an entire people, the Jews, and the nation Israel?

Are Barak Obama, John Kerry and others in the Obama administration complicit in attempted genocide?

Are the other nations of the “5 + 1” China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States; plus Germany … complicit in attempted genocide?

Are the citizens of these nations – you and I — complicit in attempted genocide?

Since the leaders of these “5 + 1”nations represent the official position of these nations to the world, I would argue that you and I are complicit in attempted genocide.

Tough words ladies and gentlemen … and tougher times to come.

There may or may not be much we can do as individuals to change this possible and  probable future outcome, but as individuals we can get right before God by seeking Him and his grace.  I urge you to do so today.

The “nuclear deal” is a gamble. A gamble on the lives of millions of people, and a gamble on the very existence of a sovereign nation and ally … Israel.

What gives these leaders the right to gamble with such high stakes? And what gives these leaders the right to this gamble given that the dice appear to be heavily loaded in favor of those whose oft stated intent is to annihilate a nation and an entire people?

Are they naïve?  Are they incompetent? Are they misguided?

           .  .  .  or  .  .  .

Are they complicit and in fact allied with an enemy?

A Nation Turns–Same Sex Marriage

Further to Hal Lindsey’s analysis of profound and important current events, I offer up this …  image

Many years ago in 1981 I came out of a long marriage with Atheism. I’ve told of that story elsewhere and if you are interested, contact me here and I will tell you the story.

A major part of that story is the man pictured above – Hal Lindsey.  His books on Biblical Prophesy were the 2×4 that hit me upside the head and changed my life … indeed changed the lives of my family as well since had that not happened in my life, in all likelihood I would be looking at that family as a stranger looking in rather than being surrounded by them. Or drunk or dead — not looking at all.

Hal Lindsey is a man with credibility – credibility for what he has done in my life …  a man I respect and admire.

So I wondered about his reading on the Supreme Court ruling on same sex marriage.

Perhaps it’s time to pay more attention to the Bible.

Catastrophic Blunder

The Hal Lindsey Report

So I wondered about his reading on the just announced nuclear “deal” with Iran.

Here it is  …

Catastrophic Blunder

The Bible contains many vivid descriptions of something that did not exist until the middle of the 20th century — thermonuclear war.  Led by the United States, the world just took a huge step toward that predicted nuclear apocalypse, the days of Antichrist, and “the time of Jacob’s trouble.”  The deal with Iran is that bad.
When I began to study Bible prophecy over 60 years ago, I saw signs even then that we were approaching the end of the age.  I knew that I might very well live to see days like this one — days when my own beloved country would help usher in and facilitate unthinkable evil.  But knowing in advance doesn’t mitigate the pain of seeing it before my own eyes.
Many of those who believe the P5+1 deal with Iran is a mistake, take solace in the fact that in the United States, the deal must pass Congress.  To keep the U.S. sanctions intact will require a supermajority voting to keep them.  Opponents of the deal have a chance to get enough votes to keep America’s sanctions in place.  But in the big picture, it probably matters very little.  Sanctions only work if they are done in concert with other nations, and I think this deal effectively ends Iranian sanctions for most nations.
Iran has a long history of simply disregarding parts of agreements that it doesn’t want to follow.  And the P5+1 nations have a history of ignoring such violations.  I don’t expect Iran to follow the agreement, but they’re getting an amazingly good deal.  It will allow them to have nuclear weapons whether they cheat or not.  If they follow the agreement, they can prepare for nuclear weapons production now, and start actually building their nuclear arsenal in just ten years.  And we must keep in mind that it is an arsenal we’re talking about, not just a single bomb.
President Barrack Obama today said, “We have stopped the spread of nuclear weapons in this region.”
I’m sure he hopes that’s true, and that his will be a legacy of peace.  But this agreement would only stop the spread of nuclear weapons in the region if it stops Iran, and if the other nations in that region believe that it will stop Iran.  But there’s nothing in this agreement to make them think that.  Their interpretation will be that, sometime in the near future, their aggressively antagonistic neighbor will become a nuclear power.  What are they going to do?  What can they do?
Even ten years is a blink of history’s eye.  The other nations of the region will see ten years as the outermost deadline for building their own nuclear arsenals.  Because they knew this was coming, several have already been at work on the project.  But the existence of an actual agreement will spur them on.
Sunni nations like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, the UAE, and Qatar feel threatened by Iran.  And it’s not just paranoia.  Iran has been exporting their Shia Muslim revolution for decades now, and it’s beginning to really take hold.  With Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, and now Yemen largely under Iran’s control, Saudi Arabia is almost surrounded.
With President Bashar al-Assad now in Iran’s pocket, and Hezbollah dependant on them, Iran is already at Israel’s door.  In May, Haaretz reported, “As-Safir, known for its pro-Hezbollah stance, revealed that the terrorist group has large amounts of forces stationed near the Israel-Lebanon border, as well as numerous tunnels, bunkers and surveillance equipment, in addition to tens of thousands of rockets.”
Who built those tens of thousands of rockets, and gave them to Hezbollah?  IRAN.
Iran already partially controls the world’s two most vulnerable oil choke points — the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Aden.  When Iranian oil is suddenly dumped into the world marketplace, we can expect oil prices to drop dramatically.  But they already have the ability to choke off a huge part of the world’s oil supply if they choose.  In a few months, you may be driving with $2-a-gallon gas.  But in a few years, you may be taking out a second mortgage just to get a fill-up.
We need to see that the Iranian threat is not just to Israel, but to civilization itself across the globe.
The thermonuclear threat now looms large over the Middle East.  But we shouldn’t be surprised.  The Bible warned us.  Zechariah 14:12 gives one of the more memorable prophecies.  How would a person in the 6th century BC describe a nuclear blast’s effect on a human body?  Like this.  “Now this will be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the peoples who have gone to war against Jerusalem; their flesh will rot while they stand on their feet, and their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongue will rot in their mouth.”
The Great Tribulation is obviously close.  Christians can count on the LORD taking us out before the extreme trouble comes.   Since in the Bible’s timetable, the Rapture comes before that, we should be looking up with renewed expectancy.  We should be praying fervently, and witnessing with urgency.  We need to be busy doing those things that matter most.  We don’t have much time left.  Thank God that before nuclear weapons destroy Israel, the LORD will miraculously save Israel from destruction.
That is promised by the LORD in these verses; Zechariah 12:7-15 and 13:8-9.  GOD KEEPS HIS WORD!

Zechariah 12:
The Lord will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall not become greater than that of Judah.
8 In that day the Lord will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; the one who is feeble among them in that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the Angel of the Lord before them. 9 It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

Mourning for the Pierced One

10 “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn. 11 In that day there shall be a great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning at Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo.[b] 12 And the land shall mourn, every family by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; 13 the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of Shimei by itself, and their wives by themselves; 14 all the families that remain, every family by itself, and their wives by themselves.

Zechariah 13:
8
And it shall come to pass in all the land,”
Says the Lord,
That two-thirds in it shall be cut off and die,
But one–third shall be left in it:
9 I will bring the one–third through the fire,
Will refine them as silver is refined,
And test them as gold is tested.
They will call on My name,
And I will answer them.
I will say, ‘This is My people’;
And each one will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’”

Step aside Hillary — predictions

image

Predictions:

  • Short Term:
    • Meet President John Neville Kerry  — most likely carrying along a Nobel. Having achieved the “deal”, Kerry is a shoo-in for the nomination as well as the general election.
Too bad, because there are many good men and one good woman on the Republican side who will be swept aside.
    • We now hear Hillary claiming that she is the one that accomplished the “deal” – not enough as Kerry achieves his life long ambition.
  • Longer term:
    • Israel will be further isolated and without allies or friends – including the US
    • Iran will announce deliverable nuclear weapons capability.
    • Other regional nations will obtain nuclear deterrent capability.
    • War of annihilation against Israel – this time with the nuclear threat. The US will stand on the sidelines.
    • Israel will once more prevail in such a war of annihilation.
  • image
  • Given the lessons of history:

Why … why do Obama and Kerry behave as if they are allies of Iran and an enemy of Israel? Could it be they are both?

Why … why are we gambling with the lives of so many … potentially in the millions as in WW-II … when Iran gets the bomb?

  • Psalm 83:O God, do not remain silent;
do not turn a deaf ear,
do not stand aloof, O God
    See how your enemies growl,
how your foes rear their heads.
    With cunning they conspire against your people;
they plot against those you cherish.
“Come,” they say, “let us destroy them as a nation,
so that Israel’s name is remembered no more.”
    With one mind they plot together;
they form an alliance against you—
the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
    of Moab and the Hagrites,
    Byblos, Ammon and Amalek,
Philistia, with the people of Tyre.
    Even Assyria has joined them
    to reinforce Lot’s descendants.[b]
Do to them as you did to Midian,
as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon,
    who perished at Endor
and became like dung on the ground.
Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,
all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,
who said, “Let us take possession
    of the pasturelands of God.”
Make them like tumbleweed, my God,
    like chaff before the wind.
    As fire consumes the forest
or a flame sets the mountains ablaze,
so pursue them with your tempest
and terrify them with your storm.
Cover their faces with shame, Lord,
so that they will seek your name.
    May they ever be ashamed and dismayed;
    may they perish in disgrace.
Let them know that you, whose name is the Lord—
that you alone are the Most High over all the earth.

Isaiah 17: (emphasis mine)
The burden against Damascus.
“Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city,
And it will be a ruinous heap.
2 The cities of Aroer are forsaken;[a]
They will be for flocks
Which lie down, and no one will make them afraid.
3 The fortress also will cease from Ephraim,
The kingdom from Damascus,
And the remnant of Syria;
They will be as the glory of the children of Israel,”
Says the Lord of hosts.

  • 4 “In that day it shall come to pass
That the glory of Jacob will wane,
And the fatness of his flesh grow lean.
5 It shall be as when the harvester gathers the grain,
    And reaps the heads with his arm;
It shall be as he who gathers heads of grain
    In the Valley of Rephaim.
6 Yet gleaning grapes will be left in it,
Like the shaking of an olive tree,
Two or three olives at the top of the uppermost bough,
Four or five in its most fruitful branches,”
Says the Lord God of Israel.7 In that day a man will look to his Maker,
And his eyes will have respect for the Holy One of Israel.
8 He will not look to the altars,
    The work of his hands;
He will not respect what his fingers have made,
Nor the wooden images[b] nor the incense altars.

9 In that day his strong cities will be as a forsaken bough[c]
    And an uppermost branch,[d]
    Which they left because of the children of Israel;
    And there will be desolation.
10 Because you have forgotten the God of your salvation,
And have not been mindful of the Rock of your stronghold,
Therefore you will plant pleasant plants
    And set out foreign seedlings;
11 In the day you will make your plant to grow,
    And in the morning you will make your seed to flourish;
But the harvest will be a heap of ruins
In the day of grief and desperate sorrow.

12 Woe to the multitude of many people
Who make a noise like the roar of the seas,
And to the rushing of nations
That make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters!
    13 The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters;
But God will rebuke them and they will flee far away,
And be chased like the chaff of the mountains before the wind,
Like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.
14 Then behold, at eventide, trouble!
And before the morning, he is no more.
This is the portion of those who plunder us,
And the lot of those who rob us.

Our Constitution – Our Morality – Our Court Decisions

John Adams wrote:

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

George Washington wrote:
”Let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”

                                          ________________________________

I’m afraid we are seeing this played out today in our culture. More and more we are losing the morality and religion that these two great men were talking about. And the more we lose of morality and religion, the more advantage will be taken of the Constitution in the form of demands for any number of rights of any and all sorts — and the subsequent law suites ultimately winding up in the high courts of the land. In short, the Constitution becomes not only irrelevant, but used against itself by those seeking any number of agendas.

And why are we losing the morality and religion Adams & Washington talked about?

Reason 1:  A very active atheistic world view has taken root in our educational system – especially at the university level … but it’s there in the lower grades as well. This world view actively seeks to destroy the very idea that God exists, especially the Judeo/Christian God of the Bible.
It seeks this destruction by attacking the idea that God created the heavens and the earth. The Judeo/Christian creation myth is replaced with the atheistic creation myth that something was created from nothing. Very prominent atheist “professors” teach and write about this and thus corrupt young and forming minds – people like Richard Dawkins and Jerry Coyne. In short – “evolution did it”

Church antidote 1: Don’t shy away from teaching Biblical creation from the pulpit and in the Sunday schools. Don’t be intimidated by the name calling that will ensue upon you. Look into and study Intelligent Design and bring these ideas and discoveries to the pulpit and into the church. A well-kept secret is that contrary to the popular belief, there is much controversy over evolution, and the case for “macro-evolution” is very weak – there is no “mountain of evidence” for Darwinian evolution .
I get the distinct impression that the church has given up on this issue and has conceded ground to Coyne and Dawkins et al – don’t give up … these attacks are at the very foundation of Jewish and Christian faith. If there is no god, then there is no creation, and the Bible becomes just a book written by ignorant and ancient Palestinian goat herders. If there is no God and no creation, then Jesus becomes just another myth peddler and liar. If you give up on this, you might just as well close the doors and start selling cars – it pays better anyway.
I was very fortunate at age 36 (and an atheist) that my first pastor was not shy about exposing his congregation to the idea of creation and encouraging us to study the issue. I am forever grateful to him since this controversy of evolution/creation was a huge stumbling block for me.

Bottom line: Teach and preach – often- the very foundation of Jewish and Christian faith – creation …

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
