Homosexual Marriage: Liberty or License?

“The compelling argument is on the side of homosexuals,” O’Reilly said. “That is where the compelling argument is. We’re Americans, we just want to be treated like everybody else. That’s a compelling argument, and to deny that you’ve got to have a very strong argument on the other side. And the other side hasn’t been able to do anything but thump the Bible.”
                            Bill O’Reilly 2013

O’Reilly is quick to dismiss the Bible as something that should be looked to as a source for moral guidance. This not unexpected in a society accelerating more and more rapidly towards the “wisdom” of constantly changing secular wisdom over the wisdom of the ages as found in the Bible. We live in a  secular republic founded on Biblical principles, but do not live under a religious theocracy.

Thus the dilemma.

We cannot as a nation impose by force of law that which is denied by our own 1’st amendment which states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;” However, read what the very founders themselves believed:

It is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. John Adams

Our Constitution Was Made Only For A Moral And Religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. John Adams

It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible. George Washington

Washington’s and Adam’s thinking was in direct alignment with the very first three words of the Constitution they took part in creating
      “We the People …”

You see it is, and always has been, up to us to defend the Constitution and the republic which it governs. We do this by remaining “A Moral And Religious People.” When we become less and abandon our moral foundations, we set in motion a destruction of that very Constitution and thus the republic itself along with our individual liberties. My friends, we are failing in our responsibilities, and the idea of placing legal and Constitutional stature on that which is immoral, such as homosexuality and homosexual marriage takes us beyond that boundary that Adams and Washington were talking about.

Let’s take a look at what is said when we are “thumping the Bible.”

  • 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”
  • Leviticus 20:13 – “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”
  • Romans 1:26-27 “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.”
  • 1 Timothy 1:9-11: “This means understanding that the law is laid down not for the innocent but for the lawless and disobedient, for the godless and sinful, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their father or mother, for murderers, fornicators, sodomites, slave-traders, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to the sound teaching that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.”

And about man and woman and marriage .

  • Genesis 2:22-24 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.  The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman, ‘ for she was taken out of man.”  For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
  • Proverbs 5:18-19  May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.  A loving doe, a graceful deer– may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love.
  • Proverbs 12:4 A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.
  • Proverbs 18:22 He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORD.
  • Proverbs 19:14 Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the LORD.
  • Proverbs 20:6-7  Many a man claims to have unfailing love, but a faithful man who can find?  The righteous man leads a blameless life; blessed are his children after him.

  • Proverbs 30:18-19 “There are three things that are too amazing for me, four that I do not understand:  the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a maiden.
  • Proverbs 31:10 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.

  • Deuteronomy 24:5 If a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any other duty laid on him. For one year he is to be free to stay at home and bring happiness to the wife he has married.

  • Matthew 19:4-6 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’  and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’ ?  So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

  • 1 Corinthians 7:1-16 Now for the matters you wrote about: It is good for a man not to marry.  But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband.  The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.  The wife’s body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband’s body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife.  Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.  I say this as a concession, not as a command.  I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.  Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am.  But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.  To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband.  But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.  To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her.  And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him.  For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.  But if the unbeliever leaves, let him do so. A believing man or woman is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace.  How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

  • Ephesians 5:22-23 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.  For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

  • Colossians 3:18-19 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.  Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
  • Hebrews 13:4-7 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.  Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”  So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”  Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.
  • Mark 10:6-9 But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’  ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,  and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one.  Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”
So Mr. O’Reilly, do you take your wisdom and admonitions dating from the creation of man and women, which when faithfully applied have served mankind and families very well for multitudes of generations?

Or Mr. O’Reilly, do you take your wisdom and admonitions dating way, way back to say 2012-2013? And what will that wisdom say in a year or two; a decade or two?

What about the “Natural Order” of things?

Human sexuality has an undeniable “natural order” about it; there’s the male and there’s the female.

This “natural order” is there at all levels; the Bible describes it, anatomy shows it, DNA designs it, society reflects it, and marriage affirms it.

To deny this “natural order” is perversion at all levels, and I use the word perversion deliberately from the Wikipedia definition as ‘a concept describing those types of human behavior that deviate from that which is understood to be orthodox or normal.

Denial of the natural order is a perversion of the Bible in its various passages on man, women and marriage.

Denial of the natural order is a perversion of the beliefs of the beliefs of the vast majority of people of all faiths.

Denial of the natural order is a perversion of the clear demonstration of human anatomy.

Denial of the natural order is a perversion of our scientific understanding of biology and the part that DNA plays in constructing males and females of the human species.

Denial of the natural order is a perversion of the moral fabric in which parents use in raising children. Girls and boys are instinctively recognized by parents to be fundamentally different, and (most) raise boys and girls accordingly.

Denial of the natural order is a perversion of our educational system when schools attempt to fit everyone into the same mold. Will we have our schools teach the next generations that homosexuality is just another “natural” and normal lifestyle?

Denial of the natural order is a perversion of our national public health by opening wide the gates of sexually transmitted diseases. Do we remember the HIV/AIDS crisis of a few years back? It has not gone away, nor have all manner of other STDs, some of which are incurable. Who is more compassionate, a Jerry Falwell who advised folks to “quit doing that or it may kill you!”  or the post modern liberal who pats the young boy on the head and says “that’s OK, it’s just another way of expressing love?”

Denial of the natural order is a perversion of our legal system which rightfully protects females from various abuses from males, rape being one such abuse.

Denial of the natural order is a perversion of the institution of marriage as understood by most civilizations and cultures spanning the history of the human animal on this Earth.

And again I ask you Mr. O’Reilly, do you take your wisdom and admonitions dating from the creation of man and women, which if faithfully applied have served mankind and families very well for multitudes of generations?

Or Mr. O’Reilly, do you take your wisdom and admonitions dating way, way back to say 2012-2013? And what will that wisdom say in a year or two; a decade or two?

So you see Mr. O’Reilly, there is indeed a “compelling argument on the other side” as you put it. But when the strong winds of Cultural and Political Correctness blow, so many just cower in fear and bend with that wind rather than standing firm against it.

Will we have liberty, or will we trade liberty for license?

    Don,
I think you missed Bill O’Reilly’s point in that the progressives are very vocal, strong, and persistent in presenting the argument for same-sex-marriage while the religious community, as you say, “.. just cower in fear and bend with that wind rather than standing firm against it” i.e., just thump the Bible and expect the other side to educate themselves to the Bible’s teachings. Bill didn’t say the Bible is not a source for a strong counter argument just simply that the religious are not vocal and strong in presenting the message of the Bible in such compelling detail as you just have. Same reason the terms Christmas and now Easter are being diminished in the secular organizations; Christians won’t stand up and be counted. And in that context I see the situation the same as Bill O’Reilly.

  2. Thanks for your comment Jim. What I reacted to was O’Reilly’s statement of “no compelling counter argument” against codifying homosexual marriage. As you can see in my subsequent comments, there are such good counter arguments, but unfortunately they typically show up on conservative and/or Catholic outlets and thus don’t get the coverage in the MSM. That said, I have to eat a bit of crow since USA Today had an excellent counter argument by the Catholic Archbishop of San Francisco; see my comment on that interview.
    Again, thanks for your input.

The original colleges in this country where established as seminaries. The principle book used in higher education was the bible. Now that this book is no longer allowed to be taught in those institutions, in fact the book is actually is looked upon as useless by these institutions, they do not allow anyone to use its teachings as a defense. So many in the past tried to destroy the book. However no book has proven itself prophetically to be so accurate. We see in the dead sea scrolls fully intact word for word in the old testament and over 1400 exact copies of the new testament dating back to the 1st century. I have noticed Mr. O”Reilly over the past several years begin to evolve like so many of our politicians. That path is well trodden with many past dead nations, theories and institutions who decide to bury the bible. So many politicians and other people of “so called high intellect” think they are evolving when actually their thought process seem so aligned with the 2nd law of thermodynamics. Their minds decay faster then a new car off the lot. The best line I heard about the bible came from an Israeli student in while I was in the Israeli museum. ” Someday the world will catch up to truths where the bible is already and has always been”.
